Lightning risk mitigation for wind energy professionals

Wind turbines are particularly exposed, as they are tall, insulated structures with sensitive electronics, which are prone to lightning strikes. 

A German study a few years ago showed that 80% of all wind turbine claims reported to insurance companies were caused by lightning. A lightning strike can lead to production downtime and particularly high economic losses. For example, one wind farm in the US had 85% of its downtime related to lightning in its first full year of operation. Total damages exceeded $250,000.
