Accurate statistics for lightning risk prevention

Our Lightning Density service provides you with reliable statistical data that complies with international standards (IEC 62305-2 and IEC 62858) for assessing lightning risk in Europe.

To correctly design and size lightning protection systems (LPS), you need to base your calculations on the most accurate statistics possible.

High-resolution lightning data

Our Lightning density service analyzes METEORAGE lightning data over a 10-year period, within a 5 km radius of a site of your choice (mailing address or coordinates in decimal degrees).

You will receive a detailed report including the following information:

  • Lightning density Nsg: Value and statistical confidence index.
  • Lightning density Ng: Number of ground lightning strikes per square kilometer per year.
  • Number of thunderstorm days per year: Number of days on which at least one lightning flash was detected.
  • Maximum annual Nsg value: Indication of the maximum observed risk.

In line with international standards, METEORAGE recommends the use of Nsg.

Terminology:

  • Nsg defines the lightning density calculated based on the ground strike points generated by a Cloud-to-Ground lightning. The IEC 62858 standard, transposed into NF EN 62858, recommends using this parameter to calculate the lightning risk, as it takes into account the location of all ground strike points.

  • Ng is the lightning density calculated based on the first return stroke (or flash or first ground strike point) in a Cloud-to-Ground lightning.  This parameter underestimates the lightning risk since it considers only the first ground strike point in a Cloud-to-Ground lightning. It may be recalled that Cloud-to-Ground lightning with negative polarity (about 90% of all Cloud-to-Ground lightning) generate at least two ground strike points (called “forked” lightning).

  • The number of thunderstorm days is the number of days when at least one lightning event, either cloud-to-ground or intra-cloud, was located in the survey area.
