Since 2003, Rede Eléctrica Nacional has been using real-time lightning information, as it plays an important and critical role in the operation of the high-voltage network.
Before and/or during network maintenance operations, the REN operator decides to confirm or cancel planned operations if a thunderstorm is approaching the work area. For areas where lightning is detected, REN uses the L-2 safety criteria on the pillars supporting two circuits as there is a risk of failure that could impact the network at the highest level. A risk management application is therefore being developed to calculate the probability of failure for each line. We are using METEORAGE’s real-time information for this pilot application.”
